Nostalgic restaurants in Goa that were Portuguese bungalows in their past lives – Part 1/2

Goa boasts an inimitable charm. Be it the beaches, the vibrant Portuguese architecture, or the delightful culinary experiences, Goa mesmerises everyone. Adding to the list are these restaurants in Goa which are built within old homes and bungalows, showcasing the vintage charm of the city.

Amancio, Siolim

Amancio is a four-decade-old Classic Bar and Family Restaurant run by Jose Amancio Fernandes and his wife Rosita. The charming diner is tucked away in an old Portuguese house and lies on the way to the busy Siolim market.

The Second House, Saligao

Amongst the restaurants in Goa, The Second House is nestled in the enchanting neighbourhood of Saligao, renowned for its picturesque paddy fields. The fine-dine restaurant is started in a 108-year-old Indo-Portuguese bungalow spanning 9,000 square feet.

O’Coquiero, Porvorim

Steeped Mangalore-tiled red roof, exposed laterite columns, chira flooring, wooden furniture, lots of potted plants, a massive courtyard, and a cosy porch describe the design of this Goan-Portuguese restaurant in Povorim. The rustic restaurant started in an old Goan villa and is also known for introducing the famous Chicken Cafreal to Goa in 1968 through chef extraordinaire Gines Viegas.

Hospedaria Venite, Panjim

Founded in 1954, this legacy inn-turned-restaurant and bar in the bustling locality of Panjim is characterised by wooden floorings, tiny balconies, patterned tiles, cosy seating, and graffiti walls. ‘Hospedaria’ means a homestay, while venite is Latin for welcome, evoking the heartwarming sentiment of a home away from home.
