The Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC)recently launched the Monsoon Trekking programme to boost tourism in hinterland areas.
While addressing the launch event at Tambdi Surla in South Goa, GTDC Chairman and Sanvordem MLA Dr Ganesh Gaonkar added that this move will help boost the economy of Goa and will further help to generate employment for locals.
As per the reports, more than eight million tourists visit Goa every year, and most of them prefer to visit the beaches to enjoy sun, sand, and the sea during their vacation. However, now the Goa Government is also focusing on hinterland tourism.
Referring to this, Gaonkar elaborated that there are several things one can’t find or see on the beaches. However, in hinterland areas, one gets 100 per cent fresh air free of cost, whereas they don’t have to pay for it, he added.
He also assured tourists of safe trekking, and added, “Your safety is of utmost importance.”
Gaonkar stated that the concept of Atithi Devo Bhava would be made meaningful in the coastal state, and that the Monsoon Trekking programme will be extended in other areas.
The Chairman also added that the tourist guides will be trained by the GTDC and the Forest Department, and that only certified guides will be permitted to accompany tourists.
GTDC Managing Director Nikhil Desai informed that the first series of monsoon trekking has already started. “This will be a four hour trek, where tourists will enjoy watching flora and fauna and how beautiful the hinterland is,” he said.
He also added that this trek will be organised only on Sundays.
